Proposal Development and Leader Responsibilities Study Abroad is relevant and meaningful for all academic fields. Thus, we welcome participation from UIndy faculty interested in leading a faculty-led travel program for students.
Strategies - Choose a UIndy course in your department that will have broad appeal to as many students as possible. The more potential students eligible for a program, the better chances you have of finding the minimum of 12 students to enroll in your program.
- Choose a UIndy course that is typically over-enrolled on campus, thus increasing the capacity for more students to enroll in a popular course.
- Choose a lower-division and/or General Education course that will be relevant to more students.
- Choose a location that will enable you to integrate meaningful site visits, field trips, special speakers, and experiential components as possible.
- The location is not as important as the academic credit. Thus, it is not necessary to choose a "popular location" as it is to offer a course that many students are interested in completing. Students will go to totally unknown destinations with a professor that is excited about the program.
- Choose a location that has been vetted for health and safety and risk management for student groups. Just because you would like to go there, or you have been there many times yourself, does not necessarily mean that it is a good location to take a group of students.
Instructions - Discuss your program idea with Mimi Chase (academic relevancy, estimated costs, and risk management)
- Thoroughly review the Faculty-led program Handbook
- Complete the Faculty-led program Proposal
After program is approved:- Complete required forms
- Develop program promotional materials (website, flyer, poster)
- Conduct information sessions
- Prepare students
While abroad:- You are teacher, counselor, risk management, dean of students, housing coordinator, transportation coordinator, etc. while group of students is away from campus
- Communicate with Office of International Programs if ANY incidents occur
- Keep students busy and engaged with structured assignments and activities
